We have just finished hosting our first Medical Mission Trip! After a postponement from the team and a few mishaps, we had a VERY successful Mission.
We had a team of Doctors and Nurses from the US and Cameroon, 2 Pastors and a few of us lay "ministers". We have started a partnership with WeCCARE Foundation based out of Yaounde, Cameroon that will bring free medical care to the inmates in the Buea Central Prison, vulnerable children and members of the villages we work with. The team was only here 2 days but in those two days we were able to minister the Gospel, consult over 110 patients and operate on 12 inmates who would not have had an opportunity to have their surgeries.
The surgeon himself, Dr. Sammy Oben gave a message before all of our work began and we had an Evangelism team to pray with the locals and speak to them about the Lord while consultations and surgeries were taking place. We had planned to show Christian films as well, but the generator that was rented wasn't powerful enough to power the projector.
We are so grateful to have had this opportunity and we are already planning the next mission! Our trip was made even more successful because of the 2002 GMC Sierra truck that we had donated last year. We were able to transport all of our supplies and volunteers for less than half the cost of renting vehicles and paying for drivers. We were also able to shuttle locals to the village that would have otherwise had to walk a few miles in for treatment. We spent about $200 on fuel for all of the prep work as well as the mission itself and the driver donated his time. If we would have had to pay for renting the car and paying the driver, it would have been well over $800! We are so grateful that the ministry has been made easier. We look forward to serving many others in the future.
I was even more blessed with this particular mission trip because one of our juveniles who was an inmate in the prison was a part of our ministry team. He has been going out with us for ministry locally and working with us with all of our projects. He has also started recruiting his friends to come and volunteer with us so that they are touched by Christ's love and they are off of the streets. We will be hiring one of his friends to assist with our farm projects this week! It was such a blessing to see Schwartz ministering. I was in with the surgeries, but I was told he preached a powerful message to the juvenile inmates while the rest of the team was ministering to them. My Mama heart is completely full! This is what our ministry is about. We strive to make a difference in the life of ONE person at a time and watch the power of RELATIONSHIP work. Relationship first with the Father and then with each other. This is true Discipleship. Discipleship isn't a class, but it's a lifestyle that you live.
As a part of our agreement with WeCCare Foundation, we provide the follow-up care with local Doctors and Nurses and Daughters of Destiny volunteers provides meals and palliative care for those operated for 10 days after their surgeries. We are so blessed that a local Kids Against Hunger site in Monmouth, Illinois provided a pallet of meals for us to share with our inmates and vulnerable children. This has greatly assisted us by providing meals for the inmates. We usually take an egg sandwich or PAP (think Cream of Wheat but not really) for breakfast and the Kids Against Hunger Meals and a local soup or fish for lunch/dinner daily. We also pray with the inmates and provide them a bit or emotional comfort daily. This has been a huge blessing to our team as well as the inmates.
We are so grateful to be able to share the love of Christ as well as meet these medical needs. Our makeshift Operating Room took place in the church of the Central Prison. It wasn't lost on me that we were providing healing services in the place where Ultimate Healing happens.
Our plan with WeCCARE is to provide these Mission Opportunities 4 times per year. If you are a Doctor or Nurse or someone who is interested in joining a team, please let me know.
In May, I have been asked to travel to the Eastern Part of Cameroon to work with some troubled young women. I am going to a place where these girls start having kids at age 12. Many are prostitutes and many have 4 or 5 kids by age 20. These facts riddled my brain when I first met with the leader of the group I will be working with. Friends recommended me to her because of the work we do with young girls here in Buea. So after asking the Lord if I can really be effective with these young ladies, I will be heading to the East on May 10 for a few weeks. The plan is to begin with teaching them their identity in Christ and how the Lord gives Beauty for Ashes. If this is received well, I will spend a bit of time teaching them some practical things to make money without selling their bodies.
I greatly need your prayers for this next mission. This is a community that has been exploited by "outsiders." They are leery of strangers, but Ms. Irene is convinced that with God's help, I will be able to get through to these young ladies. Most of them have NEVER gone to school and selling their bodies is the only thing they know how to do. We are talking about generations of prostitutes. I'm trusting God that He has and will continue to give me the plan for how to get through to them. Please be praying for their hearts to be sensitive to the word of God and that I will lean only on God's strength and not my own.
Please be praying also for our School. We start Business classes for the Vocational Training part of Hope and Destiny Academy on Wed. April 22. The classes will go for six weeks and we will close until Sept. We are working on our legal paperwork to make the school official and I'm working on recruiting the Volunteer Advisory Board. I have great leaders who have partnered with us here and are guiding us with the work. I'm so grateful.
God loves you whether you feel like you deserve His love or not. Do not settle for survival mode. God wants you to walk in His love and power; He wants you to flourish as you go through difficulties. When you thrive in times of challenge, you influence others. Your life points people in God’s direction. Reach out and take hold of the plan of God for your life!
